About PetCostCalc
Free calculators to help you understand what a pet really costs — and which financial strategy actually fits how you live, not just how you'd like to live.
PetCostCalc started after noticing the same pattern over and over in personal-finance and pet-owner communities: almost everyone agrees that "I'll just save the money myself instead of buying insurance" is the cheaper plan in theory — and almost nobody actually keeps doing it for years in practice.
That gap between what people intend to do and what they actually do is the whole reason this site exists. We're independent investing and personal-finance enthusiasts, not veterinarians, not licensed insurance agents, and not financial advisors. PetCostCalc's calculators are built by comparing publicly available cost data, published insurance pricing patterns, and long-run market return data — then laid out so you can see, side by side, what a given choice actually tends to cost or earn over time.
The goal isn't to tell you "insurance is good" or "insurance is bad." It's to help you be honest with yourself about which path you'll actually stick with — because the math only works if you follow through on it.
Our editorial approach
Every calculator on this site shows its assumptions, not just an output number. Where we cite a specific figure (average vet costs, historical index returns, typical insurance premiums), we link to or name the source, and we present ranges instead of false precision wherever the underlying data is itself a range.
We update figures periodically as new data becomes available. If you spot something that looks outdated or wrong, we want to know — reach out through the contact details on our disclaimer page.
