How this estimate is calculated

Annual figures start from commonly cited pet-cost ranges (ASPCA pet care cost estimates, veterinary industry cost surveys, and pet insurer cost studies) for food, routine veterinary care, supplies, and grooming, adjusted by size and a simple cost-of-living multiplier for your area. First-year cost adds one-time items: initial vet visits and vaccines, spay/neuter, a starter set of supplies, and the adoption/purchase fee. Lifetime cost multiplies the ongoing annual estimate by the pet's typical remaining life expectancy for its size and species. These are planning estimates, not quotes — actual costs vary a lot by individual animal, vet, and region.
