How this estimate is calculated

The calculator starts from U.S. industry-average premiums reported by NAPHIA and then applies transparent PetCostCalc planning adjustments for age, breed-risk tier, plan design and local price level. NAPHIA's industry data represents approximately 99% of written pet-health-insurance premium in the U.S. and Canada. The baseline averages used here are from NAPHIA's 2025 State of the Industry report, which reports 2024 U.S. weighted-average premiums and was compiled by Willis Towers Watson. Actual quotes vary by insurer, ZIP code, breed, age, reimbursement, deductible, annual limits, underwriting and medical history. See the full methodology and sources.

How to read your pet insurance estimate

This pet insurance calculator returns a monthly range rather than a single price, because real premiums depend on the insurer, your pet's history and the exact policy. The range moves with the choices you make: a younger pet, a higher deductible or a lower reimbursement rate usually points toward a lower premium, while a higher annual limit or added wellness coverage usually points the other way. Local prices and breed risk also shift the result.

Use the example veterinary bill to see what happens in a claim, not just on the price tag. A cheaper premium can leave you with a larger share of a big bill, so compare the premium and the out-of-pocket amount together. Once you have a pet insurance estimate you are comfortable with, request real quotes with the same deductible, reimbursement rate and annual limit from several providers, and read the exclusions and waiting periods before you buy. Our guide to how pet insurance deductibles, reimbursement and limits work explains each term.

Pet insurance calculator FAQ

Is this a pet insurance quote?

No. The calculator uses published U.S. industry benchmarks and PetCostCalc planning adjustments. A real quote depends on the insurer, pet, location, policy design and underwriting.

What do deductible and reimbursement mean?

The deductible is the amount you pay under the scenario before reimbursement is calculated. The reimbursement rate is the percentage of eligible costs used in this simplified example. Actual policies can apply these mechanics differently.

Does the annual limit change what insurance pays?

Yes, in the calculator's illustrative scenario. Reimbursement is capped at the selected annual limit. Real policies can differ in how limits, deductibles and eligible expenses interact.

Why can my real premium be different?

Insurers price policies using factors that vary by provider and policy, including pet characteristics, location, coverage design and underwriting. Use this result as a planning range, then check current quotes and policy terms.
